The monitor 'Havelock' or 'Roberts' in home waters at sunset, with other naval shipping RMG PV3472, William Lionel Wyllie, 1916

The monitor 'havelock' or 'roberts' in home waters at sunset, with other naval shipping a fine sunset study showing an 'abercrombie'-class monitor in the centre and a p-class patrol boat on the far right, with a destroyer and a steam launch also in the picture. There were four such monitors: 'abercrombie', completed on 29 may 1915, 'havelock' completed on 18 june 1915, 'raglan' completed on 24 june 1915 and 'roberts' completed on 14 june 1915. All four were immediately sent to the dardanelles and operated there from july 1915 to february or march 1916. The 'abercrombie' and 'raglan' remained in the mediterranean but the 'havelock' and 'roberts' returned to the uk in april 1916. The p-class patrol boats only served in home waters and the first was completed in december 1915. The monitor is therefore either 'havelock' or 'roberts' and in late 1916 both of these ships had their funnels raised by 12 feet. This depiction shows the vessel with the original short funnel, so it has to date to mid-1916. Date: 1916. Dimensions: 111 mm x 315 mm. Collection: Fine art.
