Field post letters from hans koch, vienna, world war ii, eastern front, 1922-1945 previous letter (1943-09-04) letter no. 186 (1943-09-07) next letter (1943-09-13) in the field, september 7, 1943 my beloved mother! today was a day of great joy for me because today i received the first letter from you, the card dated august 27th and the letter dated august 29th. I was very happy. I'm sure you received my mail from the old field post number, right? we changed positions many times in that time and marched. Last night we came out of the fighting position into reserve but nobody knows how long it will take. Today i washed and shaved again for the first time in a long time and it's a relief. After three weeks we were able to take our boots off again and now we can sleep more too. We have had a difficult forest battle behind us, now we are in a village, we burned down all the houses. The russians came with tanks but couldn't get through, now they have calmed down again. I am glad to be back with my old company, even though many are falling. I am doing well so far and am healthy. The weather is better now. You don't need to worry about the cold, i have had a blanket for a long time now. We are always outside now and sleep in holes with sheets over them and straw inside, which makes it nice and warm. Please don't worry too much, everything will be fine. We want to pray to our lord to keep us healthy and that this terrible war will soon come to an end. Date: 7 September 1943.
