iconographic description:
a man stands with his legs slightly apart, a cane in his hand and wearing a top hat. He looks up into the sky, indifferent to what surrounds him. A woman passes by him, she turns to stare at him. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: " -- etienne, said madame de la baudraye, do you know what my lord and master has just proposed to me? in the event that i would like to live in anzy during his absence, he has given his orders, and he hopes that the good advice of my mother will decide me to return there with my children. -- the advice is excellent, replied dryly lousteau, who knew dinah well enough to know the passionate response she begged for with a look, this tone, the accent, the indifferent look, everything struck so hard this woman who lived solely by her love, that she let two big tears flow from her eyes down her cheeks without responding, and lousteau only noticed it at the moment when she took her handkerchief to wipe away these two pearls of pain.
