Reflection, Frederick Sandys, 1871

The model for this work was mary emma jones. Sandys first met her in 1862 in norwich where she was working with a traveling theater company. She modeled for him and he fell in love with her, bearing a child in 1866. Four other daughters followed, including winifred, whose work is also included in the museum's bancroft collection. The couple remained together until sandys’ death in 1904. (see references). Date: 1871. Dimensions: height: 21.5 in (54.6 cm); width: 14.5 in (36.8 cm) with frame: height: 24.2 in (61.5 cm); width: 17.2 in (43.8 cm). Medium: black and red chalk, paper. Collection: Delaware Art Museum.
