This oil sketch is guthrie’s first idea for a large canvas commemorating the leaders of the british empire who had led britain to victory in the first world war. Guthrie took eleven years to complete the painting. Even at this early stage, guthrie has included the statue of winged victory, a symbol of the triumph. However, in the final work, the statue becomes a more dominant part of the composition, towering over the statesmen as they gather round the table. This creates a much more powerful and dynamic scene. Object Type: painting. Date: between 1924 and 1930. Dimensions: height: 55.8 cm (21.9 in); width: 81.9 cm (32.2 in). Medium: oil on canvas.
