In the years 1896–1910, jacek malczewski lived in the villa "pod matką boskiej" on today's książe józefa street, in the suburban district of krakow - zwierzyniec. The district, located on a hill, is famous for its picturesque landscapes and views of the city center, as well as its architectural monuments. The painter's house, standing on a riverside slope, was separated from the vistula only by a road. From the balcony that does not exist today, there was a vast view of the vistula valley towards the benedictine abbey in tyniec, and from the hill behind the house - of the surrounding gardens. The landscape from zwierzyniec often appears as a background in malczewski's paintings from that time and as an independent topic in small landscape compositions. (światosław lenartowicz).
