Collective portrait. Bust figures surmounted by a number relating to the legend located at the bottom of the engraving. Third estate, deputies, peasant deputy, nobility, clergy: catholic, carthusian monk, protestant pastor. Historical commentary: on june 20, 1789, the king closed the room known as “menus plaisirs” in order to prevent the deputies of the third estate from meeting. They then decided to meet, with some clergy deputies, in the paume game room, located a few hundred meters from the palace of versailles. Once reunited, they take an oath not to separate before having given a constitution to the kingdom of france, this aiming to put an end to the absolute monarchy, by legally limiting the powers of the king. This engraving illustrates the portraits of the main actors of the jeu de paume oath. It is a counterpart to the engraving carg027648 which is inspired by the painting by jacques-louis david.
