In 1849, on the advice of doctors, karl briullov left st. Petersburg for the island of madeira, where he stayed for about a year. Among the few of the russian colony on the island, briullov met with the myussars. Evgeny myussar (c. 1814-1896) was secretary to duke maximilian and his wife grand duchess maria nikolaevna. In the watercolor portrait evgeny is shown with his wife emily myussar (c. 1823-1902). "it conveys the texture of clothing and accessories — and the equestrian myussars.
