Cobo Bay RMG BHC0063, John Everett, 1911, circa

Cobo bay a sketch showing the movement of the waves breaking close to the shore, at cobo bay, guernsey. Everett has concentrated on the frothy white foam as the wind catches the surface of the waves. The grey foreboding sky is streaked with horizontal colour in tones of slate grey over a green sea. He visited cobo bay, guernsey, in the channel islands between january and march 1911 spending three months at the rockmount hotel which had a view directly out to sea. He constantly painted the sea and the effects of light on the surface of the water, at different times of the day and in varying conditions. He revisited the area for three months between 12 january and march 1937 when he rented a studio on the cliffs at grande rocque near cobo bay. On this later occasion he noted that the weather was very wet and he was not able to do much painting. The sketch is inscribed 'cobo' verso. Seascape. Date: 1911, circa. Dimensions: Painting: 250 x 355 mm. Collection: Oil paintings.
