Saint Giles, his bells, Charles Altamont Doyle

Saint Giles, his bells, Charles Altamont Doyle

The artist depicted his perception of ghosts as personified memories brought back by the bells as they ring at midnight in the nocturnal sky above st. Giles cathedral in edinburgh. His spectral picture of st. Giles exhibits a flow of ghosts haunting the city. Among them there are villains, heroes, celebrities and individuals of the mob: montrose being driven to his execution; departing for the crimean war in 1854, the 4th light infantry; prince charles escorted by the clans; george iv arriving in a carriage; fishwives and agents of the auld town guard. Date: 19th century. Medium: watercolor. Saint Giles His Bells - C A Doyle
