iconographic description:
pl. N°3 of a series of 4 pl. , within pl. Monthly lithography, on the theme of agricultural work to the rhythm of the four seasons. The title is due to mathieu laensberg. In the foreground, common men of different ages rid a tree of the bad caterpillars inhabiting it. This is the “national tree” (in explanation) that they are trying to weed: they rid it of harmful caterpillars. Each animal having the body of a caterpillar and the head of one of the members of the government, they try to clean up the regime of politicians considered harmful to the development of the french republic. Among these portraits, we can recognize: thiers (lowest on the tree), bottom left, lobau (a small bubble coming from his mouth mentions "traitemen […] [treatment] // 50,000", two others: keratry and the "stephanus" (in explanation. It is lameth), argout on a branch on the left, three caterpillars gathered in a bag bearing the inscription "indictment" (louis-philippe, persil et?), cunin-gridaine at the top, dupin with his magistrate's headdress, soult pronouncing "salary // 50,000", montalivet wrapped in a bag bearing the inscription "liste // civile". [senators]". Others are less easily recognizable. On the ground, at the foot of the tree, some already fallen caterpillars crawl: from right to left: barthe, guizot (in front of the tree), françois-gilbert-jacques lefebvre known as jacot lefaive (behind the tree), madier de montjau. Poulot (the duke of orléans) is crushed under the foot of a young boy wearing the tricolor cockade on his headdress. The dupin caterpillar fights with a dog, the figaro caterpillar (the newspaper), already crushed (with its hat), and the slug “snitch” (in explanation), all eyes out. Bottom right in the foreground, the mole of “restauratio […] [restoration]”, and the mushroom “henri v” (legitimism). Left in the background, a gardener cuts the dead branches of an old pear tree (the trunk of which takes on the features of louis-philippe's face). Behind him, another old tree without fruit, whose trunk seems to have the features of talleyrand. In the background, the freedom of the press, in the form of a woman dressed in antique style and wearing the phrygian cap decorated with the tricolor cockade (the allegorical figure of freedom, "mother freedom, freedom of the press", in explanation) sows institutions in the form of papers. She is helped in this by little girls, incarnations of other freedoms. These small sheets bear the mentions of “law // munici // pale [municipal]”, “capacities”, “divorce”, “non-salaried priests”, “tax [tax] // progressive”, “sovereignty // of the people”, “assembly // primary”, “presidency // in terms [?]”. In the background to the right, a very tall tree with a phrygian cap at the top. Person / character represented:
