The Burning of Protopope Avvakum., Pyotr Myasoedov, 1897

The raskol (schism) of the xvii century in russia and the old believers as a special branch of orthodoxy. Religious-political movement of the xvii century, as a result of which there was separation from the russian orthodox church of the faithful, not to accept the reforms of patriarch nikon. The leader and ideologist of the old believers protopope (archpriest) avvakum as well as priest lazarus, deacon theodore, monk epiphany were exiled to the far north and imprisoned in an earthen prison pustozersk.
