On december 16, 1895, degas photographed his friends auguste renoir and stéphane mallarmé during a dinner at julie manet's house at 40 rue de villejust (now rue paul valéry). Mallarmé had been the young girl's guardian since the death of her mother, berthe morisot, a few months earlier. Degas immortalised stéphane mallarmé standing, leaning against the wall, and auguste renoir sitting next to him in front of a mirror. The poet looks at the painter, who looks at the camera with his head tilted slightly back. This position allows the two artists to remain motionless during the long minutes required to make the impression on the photographic plate. According to paul valéry, degas had his models pose for fifteen minutes under the light of nine kerosene lamps. The mirror reflects degas and his camera, as well as marie and geneviève mallarmé, the poet's wife and daughter, who were also photographed by degas on the same day. Date: 16 December 1895.
