Children in the snow, oil on canvas, 140 x 200 cm. Signed and dated bottom right "r. Borrmeister 1920". Possibly an illustration of the poem "the children in the snow" by heinrich seidel (1842-1906) or a similar poem or fairy tale. The children in the snow a quiet and cold winter evening. - three children are walking through the forest. They have often walked this path alone - today the moon shimmers with a crazy glow. The path that usually leads so quickly home - today it no longer leads out into the forest. The little legs walk ahead. There the dark fir tree towers up. They run back and forth - they can no longer find their way in the snow. The little ones cry, they must have wandered far. The night and bedtime are cold! look there, under the roots, a dry hollow, where the little sister is laying them both down. She carries moss and leaves to her resting place and covers her with her own handkerchief. The night is cold, lit by the moon, - the stars sparkle in the sky. They have been sought for her with calls and cries, they have been found in the morning light. The two little ones are sleeping soundly, snuggled up together in the warm nest. Her arm full of leaves and moss, the other was found motionless. So she lay in the snow - her cheeks red, she had been kissed by icy death. Date: 1920.
