Vienna, Dominican Church, Bernardo Bellotto, between 1759 and 1760

The view of what is today vienna’s postgasse depicts on the left the façade of the dominican church, which was built between 1631 and 1634, on the right the long façade of the jesuit seminary, and in the background the jesuit observatory. Bellotto’s compositional principles are to work with sharp contrasts of light and shadow. Thus the regular façade on the right is given structure by the distinct shadows of the church across from it. Object Type: painting. Date: between 1759 and 1760. Dimensions: height: 115 cm (45.2 in) ; width: 155.5 cm (61.2 in). Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Kunsthistorisches Museum.
