Pupila-augusta-master-sb-1490s, Albrecht Dürer, before 1498

The image pupila augusta shows a reclining woman wearing a winged, snail-shaped helmet. She gazes into a bowl of water which she stirs with one finger. She is accompanied by three winged putti. Two of them are in a canistrum, (a wicker basket used in classical rites), decorated with a bucranium, (an ox skull with garlands). The name pupila augusta (exalted ward) is said to refer to venus, and the figure is either looking at her reflection or scrying. It was used as a model for albrecht dürer's 1498 pupila augusta drawing. Date: before 1498.
