Emigrant clergy reading the late decree, that all who returns shall be put to death., Isaac Cruikshank, 1792

Three men stand round a fourth who holds a paper inscribed: 'decree. Who. Return death first year of republic'. A fifth, tail and thin, stands on the right of the group in profile to the left, his hands clasped, his eyes raised. Two others stand on the left with gestures and expressions of anger. All are excessively perturbed. None wears clerical dress. A background of cast shadow only. 1792 hand-coloured etching. Date: 1792. Dimensions: Height: 245 mm; Width: 346 mm. Medium: paper.
