iconographic description:
the scene takes place in an extremely poor interior of sinners. The walls are made of disjointed wooden planks, straw is spread on the ground and a landing net is propped against a wall. The characters represented all have the head of a kingfisher. The mother covers her five hungry young children with her large cape. Her husband, with a basket on his back and a fishing rod on his shoulder, comes to present his meager catch: a ridiculous little fish. Excerpt from métamorphoses du jour (editions gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "all that the science of angling contains in secrets, all that the experience of an ancient practice can suggest in terms of tricks and resources, is implemented by these heroes of the maggot; but i admit that i do not i know of no school capable of training resignation and long-suffering like the school of angling.
