On the pillow are three royal crowns of the russian empire from the time of the beginning of the reign of catherine ii, which correspond to the title of empress - kazan, astrakhan and siberian. In the 1980 catalogue it is dated between 1762 and 1766. Tradition, as well as the inscription on the back, date the portrait to 1762. However, the work could not have been created earlier than 1763. Torelli arrived in st. Petersburg in the autumn of 1762; at that time catherine ii was in moscow, where her coronation took place on september 22 and where she remained until july 1763. It is documented that s. Torelli arrived in moscow no earlier than january 1763, and it is likely that he began the portrait then, most likely finishing it in the same year, 1763. But it is possible that it is precisely to this portrait that jacob staehlin mentions that in 1765 torelli completed work on a painting depicting catherine ii in imperial attire on the throne and presented by the empress to the senate (steehlin 1990*, p. 87). The latest possible date of its execution is 1766, the year a. P. Antropov painted a copy of the portrait (see catalog 26). Sketch (?) of a full-length portrait, executed in mirror image - saratov state art museum named after a. N. Radishchev; a modified copy of the work by a. P. Antropov (1766) - state russian museum (cat. 26). The portrait was copied many times (in fragments). Engraved by g. Lante (to the waist, with changes).
