Design for a Stained Glass Window with a Swineherd, Hans Holbein the Younger, c. 1518–19

Design for a stained glass window with a swineherd. Pen and ink and brush, grey wash, over preliminary chalk drawing, 31. 5 × 21 cm, kunstmuseum basel. This is one of holbein's earliest designs for stained glass windows, dating from the period when he lived and worked in lucerne. At this time he used a richly varied wash, rather than the unifying washes of his later style. The design might be part of a series on the theme of the seasons or on the story of the prodigal son (müller, 198). Date: c. 1518–19.
