Winter scene. Market square surrounded by tall buildings with geometric contours. On the left a pile of vegetables, on the right a café (according to its sign) where people seem to be fighting with canes; in front of him, a group composed of an old beggar who holds out her hand, a woman who tries to warm herself over a meager plank fire, two couples: one is kissing, the young woman of the other is held closely by a man in a wig (a judge?); in the center, walking towards the right, a tall, dignified and stiff woman, followed by a young boy in a suit (a servant? he carries a book and a folded garment under his arm.
