The wedding night., Isaac Cruikshank, 1797

A vulgarized imitation of bmsat 9014. Salisbury (left) stands within the door, through which a bed is visible. A cupid asleep (left) on a barrel of 'hollands' has the profile of the stadholder. The king drops candle-grease as he turns to the grinning queen, who carries a basin of 'cock broth', from which looks the head of a cock. Pitt staggers under his sack of '£80,000'. The prince and princess walk hand in hand, looking at each other; he wears many more orders and his legs are encircled with numerous garters. Lord and lady derby walk behind the three princes (the duke of clarence less caricatured than in bmsat 9014). Prince william of gloucester, less knock-kneed, is on the extreme right. The picture is altered to 'the triumph of bacchus': a nude bacchus falls tipsily from an elephant which walks to the right instead of to the left. 20 may 1797 hand-coloured etching. Date: 1797. Dimensions: Height: 304 mm; Width: 459 mm. Medium: paper. Depicted People: Princess Augusta Sophia. Collection: British Museum. The wedding night. (BM 1868,0808.6630)
