Identification title(s): three market women and a passer-by. Object type: sketchbook sheet object number: ng-1996-6-50. Description: outside in a market hall along the street, three market women have displayed their wares. They sit cross-legged on the ground under the protruding roof of woven palm leaves (cadjan), which is supported by wooden poles. The back wall and side walls are made with woven screens (warichchi), filled and covered with loam (mati), according to the traditional construction method. Two women sit on the raised steps of the hall; the woman on the left is sitting on the street in front of the sidewalk. All three women wear a long wrap skirt (redda), a long-sleeved blouse (hatte), and a shoulder cloth. Their hair is pulled back tightly in a condé, which is clearly visible on the middle woman. In front of the woman on the left are three wicker baskets pushed together, with a woven lid on top containing bunches of betel leaves; to the left of it a small basket with betel leaves, and to the right on the floor are another small container and a woven bowl with areca nuts, and behind them a filled bag and a folded bag. The woman behind it, on the left in the hall, is drawn from the side with her face in profile. The woman on the right in the hall holds a child on her lap with her right hand; it looks like she's breastfeeding it. On the floor between the women are various bowls and baskets filled with food. The largest bowl is half on the curb. The measuring cup on the edge of this bowl may indicate that there is rice or another grain on it. The flat oblong object in the middle right could be a loaf of bread. On the far right on a slope along the street is a man. He is dressed in a short waistcoat (veshti, lungi) and a shawl (chadar) wrapped around the torso and crossed arms. Sheet 50 from a sketchbook with 117 sheets. Manufacture.
