historical commentary:
under the orders of admiral villaret de joyeuse (1750-1812), around twenty french ships were responsible for escorting a wheat convoy from the united states to brest, intended to supply france. Seven ships were sunk by the anlais off ouessant, including the vengeur commanded by captain renaudin. The load managed to pass during the confrontation. In its report of the event, the committee of public safety will popularize the heroism and sacrifice of the crew
