Johann wilhelm ludwig gleim (1717-1803) engraving by schreyer after the painting by h. Ramberg. The author of the "war songs of a grenadier", who had been living in halberstadt since 1757 as a cathedral secretary, had already been in weimar in june 1777 without meeting goethe. Goethe visited him in september 1783 without either of them having anything to say to each other. The "old peleus" was unable to develop a relationship with goethe's work. Date: by 1803.
