Decemvir appius claudius, one of the college of ten legislators, was inflamed with a secret passion for the daughter of a respected centurion. He planned to take possession of her by cunning and conspired with one of those who depended on him that he would claim that this girl had previously been a slave and bring the accused to appius, who would pass a sentence in favor of his accomplice. But before she was taken away, virginia's father appeared, grabbed a knife in the butcher's shop and stabbed her. Sketch for an unrealized painting.
