Four designs divided by intersecting lines, the copy described being cut vertically into two halves. In all a pretty and graceful young woman, nude, and with shortish wavy brown hair is bathing stylized waves, with a background of chalk cliffs on which stand (tiny) eager spectators. [1] 'a fashionable dip'. She plunges head first from the steps of a bathing-machine into shallow water. [2] 'a famous stroke'. She swims with a breast-stroke, feet together, water spouting from her mouth. [3] 'side way or any way'. She swims on her side, face towards the spectator, registering complete repose. [4] 'an elegant display'. She floats, head turned to the spectator. October 1803?
