British museum, alexander the great and campaspe sitting on a couch and posing for apelles standing in the foreground in front of his easel; at the back of the sheet, a sketch in pencil representing a chimney (?). C. 1541/45 etching by: léon davent after: francesco primaticcio height: 375 millimetres width: 260 millimetres zerner 1969 ld. 51 one of the three plates etched after the frescoes executed by primaticcio for the room of the duchesse d'etampes, fontainebleau (1541-44). The preparatory drawing to primaticcio's work is kept at chatsworth (inv. 186). Also see 'the french renaissance in prints', los angeles 1994, cat. No. 49. Date: 1540s.
