Vanitas Still Life with Self-Portrait, Pieter Claesz, circa 1628

Vanitas Still Life with Self-Portrait, Pieter Claesz, circa 1628

Various objects lie on the tabletop of a wooden table that juts into the picture at an angle against a dark background. The reflection in the glass ball shows the painter's room, where he is sitting in front of his easel. In the middle of the picture, a flemish violin with a frog bow, which is due to the double inlay, lies on a stack of books. To the right of it are a skull and an overturned roman with a knobbly shaft, next to it a cracked walnut. Behind the musical instrument is an oil lamp, and to the front left is a clock with a striking mechanism. An inkwell, a quill and a leather case are grouped around it. The key to the clock and the writing utensils protrude over the edge of the table. Object Type: painting. Genre: still life. Date: circa 1628. Place of creation: Haarlem. Dimensions: height: 35.9 cm (14.1 in); width: 59 cm (23.2 in). Medium: oil on oak wood. Depicted People: Pieter Claesz. Collection: Germanisches Nationalmuseum. 1628 Claesz Vanitas-Stillleben mit Selbstbildnis anagoria
