St pantalus was the legendary first bishop of basel. According to tradition, he was martyred with st ursula and her followers at cologne. He holds a palm frond, symbolising his martyrdom (müller, 228). Holbein later incorporated st pantalus in a design for the organ shutters of basel cathedral. Date: c. 1519–21.
