St Pantalus under a Renaissance Portico, by Hans Holbein the Younger, c. 1519–21

St pantalus under a renaissance portico, design for a stained glass window. Pen and ink and brush over preliminary chalk drawing, grey wash, 54. 1 × 37. 2 cm, kunstmuseum basel. St pantalus was the legendary first bishop of basel. According to tradition, he was martyred with st ursula and her followers at cologne. He holds a palm frond, symbolising his martyrdom (müller, 228). Holbein later incorporated st pantalus in a design for the organ shutters of basel cathedral. Date: c. 1519–21.
