The canvas represents liuva i († 572), king of the visigoths. The king is represented standing, in profile, with his face turned towards the viewer. He wears a white tunic and crimson cloak and rests his hand on a long scepter. Liuva i, who reigned between 567 and 572, succeeded king athanagild, and before being proclaimed king in the city of narbonne, he had been doge of septimania. In order to avoid unnecessary conflicts, he associated his brother and successor leovigild, doge of toledo, to the throne, to whom he delegated the government of hispania while reserving that of gaul for himself. With this decision made by liuva i, the trend of the previous gothic kings was broken, who upon reaching power tried to establish themselves in it. Object Type: painting. Date: 1855.
