Watteau's "character paintings of china and tartar" series of paintings were specially painted for the royal hunting palace of the chateau de la muette. The castle and many of the paintings in it have been destroyed, and there are only prints copied from the original paintings by other painters, including one "chinese garden" (now in the ashmolean museum of oxford university, uk).
