The full-rigged ship europa was built in 1854 for 46,250 thalers by johann lange in vegesack for the shipping company dhwätjen & co. She was launched on april 25, 1854. Her keel length was 44. 6 m, her beam 10. 2 m, and she was measured at 374 commercial loads (864 nrt). In the first three years, the full-rigged ship sailed to america under captain wj ariaans with around 400 passengers and back to europe with tobacco and cotton. A coal transport took the europa from cardiff to bombay in 1857, where she was chartered by various companies for trips between calcutta, bassein, singapore, hong kong, macao, canton and shanghai until she docked in sydney in february 1860 with 500 chinese passengers. In 1861 she resumed her tobacco and cotton voyage under captain bv hagen, but this was interrupted in 1862/63 and 66 - always for 8-10 months - because the europa was chartered from new york by gildemeisters for transport to callao. On the way back she brought guano for liverpool and two loads of saltpeter for new york. On her third voyage to cape horn, typhus broke out on board. Six men were taken to the hospital in rio and the voyage could only be continued after four weeks of quarantine. With maryland tobacco, the europa arrived in bremen after a long absence in august 1867. Here she was sold for 20,000 thalers to the bremen shipping company joh. Friedr. Arens, who managed the sailing ship until 1884 and then sold it to j. Ingmansson, elleholm (sweden). The sailing ship was lost in 1890. The bremen barque union, depicted in the painting by c. Fedeler, carries the arens shipping company flag in the top, like the europa. The sailing ship union, built in 1863 by toby & littlefield in portsmouth, nh (usa), measured at 1183 grt, ex semiramis, also belonged to the joh. Friedr. Arens shipping company under the leadership of captain fokken. The sailing ship later served the german north sea steam fishing company in nordenham as an ice transport ship. Object Type: painting. Date: after 1882. Medium: oil on canvas. Collection: Werder Collection, Germany. Carl Justus Fedeler - Ship Portrait of German Ship ‚EUROPA‘ and the Bark ‚UNION‘
