"in the naval battle of lepanto in the gulf of corinth on october 7, 1571, the combined spanish, papal, venetian, genoese and tuscan fleets defeated the warships of sultan selim ii. This broke the dominance of the turks and the north african pirates in their service in the mediterranean. The painting shows don juan d'austria (1547-1578), the illegitimate son of charles v, marc antonio colonna (1536-1584), the leader of the papal troops, and sebastiano venier (d. 1578), procurator of san marco, against a background of warships. The ceremonial armor of the three was exhibited in the ambras »heroes' armory«. The painting was part of the furnishings of the so-called new hall of ruhelust castle (see estate inventory 1596). ".
