Illustration for chapter 15 of the hampdens by harriet martineau. Illustration first published in once a week magazine (volume 8, page 449); this scan taken from the book publication (page 176). Henrietta, having followed the catholic queen of england into exile, becomes a nun. "there was one trouble still. She was in pain for the souls of her father and her husband--so dreadfully guilty as they had been of rebellion, and cut off from salvation by their making the bible and not the church the anchor of their hope. She did what she could: she prayed for them as long as hse lived, and when they were dead, obtained as many masses as possible for the repose of their souls. ". Date: 18 April 1863.
