Chimney-piece design, by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1538–40

Chimney-piece design, by Hans Holbein the Younger, circa 1538–40

Design for a chimney-piece. Pen and black ink with grey, blue, and red wash on paper, 53. 9 × 47 cm, british museum, london. Throughout his career, holbein produced many designs for furniture, plate, jewellery, clocks, and other luxury goods; but this design is the only evidence that he made architectural designs in england, and the coat of arms indicates that he made it for henry viii. His chimney-piece design incorporates battle scenes and roundels of blind justice on the right and charity on the left and esther before ahasuerus below. It has been suggested that the chimney-piece was for the fireplace in whitehall palace. Date: circa 1538–40.
