Ernst friedrich wilhelm carl ferdinand philipp ludwig von hessen-philippsthal-barchfeld (1789-1850) was a captain of hesse-kassel from 1801 to 1806, a russian lieutenant colonel in 1807, a prussian colonel in 1811 and a russian colonel in 1812, later a lieutenant general in the service of england and a retired general of the russian cavalry. Jensen worked in london in 1837, where the portrait of prince ernst was probably painted. It was exhibited there the following year at the royal academy together with four other portraits by the artist. The small format is characteristic of jensen, so the painting cannot be classified as a sketch. Object Type: painting. Genre: portrait. Date: 1837. Medium: oil. Collection: Hessen Kassel Heritage.
