iconographic description:
a sandwich man carries his advertising placard on which is written the title of monnier's collection of prints. In the background, onlookers (children, women, soldiers, etc. ). Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "we did not publish that the in aere publico experience would only last seven years, five years, or even three years, and that thus the outcome would not take long to wait. It was the childhood of art! we had not even involved the publicity of these gigantic announcements by which we stimulate the imaginations, asking everyone for money” [excerpt from la maison nucingen, by honoré de balzac]
