The portrait of miss milner-gibson, daughter of thomas milner-gibson, and granddaughter of sir john gery cullum, 8th bart. , was commissioned by miss milner-gibson's half-brother thomas bowles from his friend james tissot. The artist tissot, having fled france, lived for a time at bowles' london home, and was accepting commissions for portraits. This portrait was willed to the borough of st edmundsbury by george gery milner-gibson cullum, last surviving member of the family, who left a large collection of paintings and decorative arts to the borough.
