Saint Francis kneeling in meditation, Mariana de la Cueva Benavides y Barradas, circa 1664

The work represents saint francis of assisi, the founder of the franciscan order. The saint appears kneeling, with his hands crossed over his chest, and looking towards a crucifix. Next to it, and on the protrusion of a rock, a book and a skull appear, creating a meditative context. The saint is identifiable by his brown habit and by the long cord that surrounds his waist and falls to the ground. The scene takes place in a rock shelter, and in the upper left it is possible to see a fragment of cloudscape. Object Type: painting. Genre: religious art. Date: circa 1664.
