Illustration by poul steffensen from the danish novel gjøngehøvdingen by carit etlar which takes place during the dano-swedish war in 1657-1658. The priest christen nielsen spend of vor frue kirke in vordingborg makes the sign of the cross for svend poulsen, gøngehøvdingen, before the priest secretly escapes the church to avoid the swedish troops. Svend poulsen (app. 1610 - app. 1679) and christen nielsen spend (app. 1632 - 1679) were real persons but the story is fiction. The look of svend poulsen is also fantasy as there is no known portraits of him. Christen nielsen spend in turn appears a lot older than he actually was. Date: Original illustration from the 1890s, here reprint from 1909..
