Dronningens Vagtmester 17, Poul Steffensen

Illustration by poul steffensen from the danish novel dronningens vagtmester by carit etlar which takes place during the dano-swedish war in 1658-1660. Svend poulsen, gøngehøvdingen, and ib abelsøn has come to the søholm castle to hole the hidden treasures of the noblewoman elsebeth buchwald. They pretends to be the father and brother of the dead curate tange, while the evil kulsoen pretends to be the mother of tange to get a part of the treasure for herself. Ib abelsøn and the peasant they came with bears the coffin into the hall where tange as well as the hidden treasures are. Svend poulsen and kulsoen looks at them. Svend poulsen (app. 1610 - app. 1679) was a real person but the story is fiction. The look of svend poulsen is also fantasy as there is no known portraits of him. Date: Original illustration from the 1890s, here reprint from 1909..
