Sketches of HMS 'Canada', 'Revenge', other ships, and notes on mast arrangements RMG PV2646, William Lionel Wyllie, circa 1917
Sketches of hms 'canada', 'revenge', other ships, and notes on mast arrangements
four ship sketches and one of a mast arrangement on a single sheet, with identifying and other notes. The mast sketch is a reasonably accurate one of the foretopmast of the battleship 'revenge' (1915) as in 1917 or early 1918. The top right starboard broadside drawing of the battleship 'canada' (1913) is quite basic but shows the ship as rigged in 1918. The large pencil and wash image on the right is the battleship 'revenge' (1915) as in 1917, before she was dazzle-painted. The remaining two images are unidentified but the outlines are representative of 'queen elizabeth'-class battleships, although no british warship had two yards below the foretop, a pole mainmast and an embrasured hull. The list of battleships ships down the left margin, grouped by mast arrangement, is not apparently written by wyllie but in another hand helping him. Date: circa 1917. Dimensions: 252 mm x 354 mm. Collection: Fine art.
