Capture of a large slave-ship by hms pluto. Illustration for the illustrated london news, 28 april 1860. Capture of a slave-ship. The accompanying sketch represents h. M. S. Pluto, lieut. Commander c. H. Simpson, capturing a large barque on the coast of africa with 874 slaves on board, on the morning of the 30th of november last, in lat. 4-15 s. , long. 9-30 e , being the largest number of slaves ever taken in one vessel. The pluto sighted the barque at daylight, about six or eight miles distant. With every possible sail set, and observed her alter her course in order to escape; but, as the plato was under banked fires, steam was soon got up, and in about an hour and a half she was alongside her prize. On seeing the naval officers look down the main-hatch the liberated slaves sent up a most hearty cheer, which can never be forgotten by those who heard it. Date: 28 April 1860.
