in a living room whose high walls are covered with paintings with ornate frames, a compact crowd huddles. Some sit in rich armchairs, others stand. The ladies wear extravagant dresses and hats with ribbons while the men have vests, coats, high collars and patent shoes. Actor, playwright and designer, henry monnier helped illustrate la comédie humaine. His engravings of administrative morals, and especially his play scenes from bureaucratic life, clearly inspired balzac for his novel la femme supérieure, renamed les employés. The same references to the customs of their time often inspired the two artists in parallel on numerous subjects as we can see in the following extract: "the attorney-general wanted to live in a hotel on the chaussée-d'antin where everything is young and lively, where fashions appear in their novelty, where the population of the boulevards is elegant, from where there is less distance to go to reach the shows and encounter distractions; but he was obliged to give in to the patelineries of a young woman who demanded a first pardon, and to please her he buried himself in the marais. " [excerpt from the novel a double family, by honoré de balzac]
