The painting collection of Johann Noë Gogel, Johann Daniel Bager, 1776

The painting cabinet of the frankfurt wine merchant and banker dr. Phil. And economist johann noë (noah) gogel the elder (1715-1781), whose family were wealthy, reformed religious refugees from antwerp. The painting and book collections were considered by contemporaries to be among the most important collections in frankfurt. The descendants founded a wine shop in frankfurt at kleiner hirschgraben 10, which was later combined with a bank and moved to the multi-story building "goldene kett" at roßmarkt 15, on the corner of the salzhaus. The neighboring building was the famous "english court" hotel (hotel angleterre). Both buildings were demolished around 1900 and rebuilt in the historicist style. The first inventory lists of this collection were drawn up by the temporary stock exchange director johann noë gogel i (1689-1753) and his wife maria elisabeth gogel, née teschemacher (1696-nn). The gentleman in the red coat and with the tricorn hat taken off in greeting is heinrich sebastian hüsgen (1745-1807), who is paying his respects to the master of the house, johann noë gogel ii in his red coat. Gogel is depicted surrounded by other art lovers, the lady at the easel, his second wife johann margarita gogel née hoffstadt, is practicing as an amateur painter, and the gentleman at the window, the painter johann daniel bager (1734-1815), is holding a small painting for study. Contemporaries were probably able to match the paintings on the wall to real models; the two church interiors in the upper area are clearly reminiscent of works by the then well-known frankfurt church painter johann ludwig ernst morgenstern (1738-1819) or christian georg schütz the elder (1718-1791). The paintings from various schools and subjects are distributed across the wall in a dense, symmetrical order. The passage opens up a view into a neighboring, richly stocked library, which is intended to underline the educational value of the collection. A similar arrangement was also found in the neighborhood in the house of johann caspar goethe. His son johann noë gogel iii. (1758-1825) had a large part of this magnificent collection of paintings and books auctioned in this house in 1783, after his father's death. In addition to several rembrandts, frans hals, rubens and van dycks, it also contained a major work by balthasar denner (1685-1749), depicting his daughter as "penitent mary magdalene" (oil on copper, 37 × 32 cm (internal dimensions), 45 x 40 cm (frame)). The catalogue compiled at the time listed 501 paintings alone, including works by dutch and flemish baroque painters. Italian paintings, on the other hand, were rarer. Object Type: painting. Date: 1776. Medium: oil on panel. Frankfurt Am Main-Christian Stoecklin-Johann Daniel Bager-Das Gemaeldekabinett des Johann Noe Gogel-1776
