iconographic description:
in this domestic scene, four old women are gathered around a fifth with a belly attesting to her advanced pregnancy. Despite a human silhouette, all these women have animal heads. The one who is pregnant has the face of a cat, the one who stands in front of her with a book in her hand has the head of a parakeet, the three other protagonists are adorned with the heads of a bird, a dog and a snake. Excerpt from métamorphoses du jour (editions gustave havard libraire, paris, 1854): "here are the three matrons to whom you were announced, my poor cat, once so glorious, today so desolate; they are waiting for you, and i can already see the worm-eaten code opening in which they will try to make you read the oracle that you must question. After that, it could well happen that we come across the right one; your case is so obvious, and these matters are so frequent, that by hearing them discussed from the top of her perch, it would not be surprising if lady parakeet had become familiar with them, and that she would give you a decision in accordance with the laws.
