The present panel depicts a momentous military encounter in a characteristically diverse and lively manner that is typical of vrancx. On the morning of 5th february 1600, a decisive battle between flemish mercenaries led by general lekkerbeetje and french soldiers took place near s’hertogenbosch. It was one of the most exceptional engagements during the eighty years’ war. The flemish yeomanry, whose commander died in battle, defeated the aristocratic french cavalry. The subject of the battle of leckerbeetje was so popular that vrancx painted it repeatedly: (extracted from dorotheum). Object Type: painting. Date: 17th-century.
