Max liebermann was very fond of winding alleys with their lively alternation of light and shadow as a motif, as evidenced by numerous studies of paths and streets in holland or, as here - much less frequently - in venice. In two other venetian street scenes with a similar subject (eberle 1878/17 and 1878/20), liebermann draws on figures that populate the narrow alleys in his compositions. In a watercolor painting in the hamburg art collection, which is closely related to our street scene in terms of motif, the painter also integrates the image of an old woman whom he had portrayed for an oil study (eberle 1878/19). Against this background, it seems all the more remarkable that liebermann dispenses with any figural staffage in the present work in favor of a pure architectural view, which develops almost abstract qualities in the masterfully staged rhythm of light and dark facade elements.
