On 17 november 1847, during the mexican-american war, 17 marines and 50 sailors from the sloop of war dale landed at guaymas, mexico. The americans were pinned down in a brief fire-fight and their commander was seriously wounded before the defenders dispersed. Dale later served as the training ship for the u. S. Naval academy.
